Oakland University Police Department is training its faculty to fight gunmen in their classrooms in case of emergency. These sessions have been organized by OU's faculty union. The training is part of the union’s efforts to improve classroom safety for students and faculty.
“We believe that once faculty have been trained in what to do in an active shooter situation, they will be able to share that information with students to provide a more secure learning environment,” says AAUP President Tom Discenna.
These training sessions is not the only thing Oakland University has implemented in defense of on active shooter situation. The union has also distributed hockey pucks to its members and to students. Yes, hockey pucks! Oakland University claims that hockey pucks can easily be carried in backpacks and aren't considered a weapon and will be a way to distract the shooter.
