Week two of Volunteering at the Detroit Dog Rescue is in the books! Only one more week until we're allowed to walk the dogs ahhh I can't wait. Even without that though, it's been a very rewarding experience. It feels good to help these friendly canines who have, for one reason or another, been left without a home. We make treats and enrichment toys for them, clean their kennels, and assist any way we can to improve the quality of life for these pups.
This week, we were introduced to Pogo. He's an adorable 10 year old American Bulldog mix who was friendly as can be. At first look he could be intimidating because of his size and muscle, but he is a total sweetheart. They brought him into the office to play for a bit and escape the hustle and bustle of the kennels and I couldn't believe how friendly and sweet he was. He approached M'Lady and I with kisses and turned his body around begging for rubs. Pogo was quite the character, too. He walked around the room trying to find more toys he could play with, even opening one of the boxes with his nose at one point to dig around for a rope. After some searching he'd come back and lay down in front of us for more rubs and kisses.
Hearing his story was heartbreaking and made us love him even more. After nine years in a home with a family, they gave him up. Poor guy. At 10 years old he still has the youthfulness you'd see in a one year old pup. I encourage you to get involved any way you can: volunteer, donate, foster! Anything can help. It's a very rewarding experience that I find myself looking forward to every week.
