In an interview with DโUSSE Friday, JAY-Z's mom, Gloria Carter, opened up about the conversation with her son where she told him that she was a lesbian. The rapper's nephew Rel Carter and Roc Nationโs Nashawn Carter were a part of the discussion, too.
On his latest album, 4:44, JAY informed his fans about his mom's sexual orientation on the track "Smile." According to Gloria, the sit-down that she had with him to explain her preference was very emotional. In fact, her words brought Hov to tears.
"Me and my son, we share a lot of information. So, I was sitting there and I was telling him one day. I just finally started telling him who I was," Gloria admitted. "Besides your mother, this is the person that I am, you know? This is the life that I lived. So, my son started actually, like, tearing because he was like, โThat had to be a horrible life, ma.โ I was like, โMy life was never horrible. It was just different.โ So that made him want to do a song about it."
The mom also spoke about not wanting JAY to create "Smile." Gloria said that when she told Hov her sexual orientation, this was a personal conversation she had with only him. So, that didn't mean that she wanted the entire world to know her business.
"We talked about it and we talked about it,โ Gloria added. โThen, I was going out to see him and I was on the plane and I was like, 'Ok, Iโm going to help him if weโre going to do it.' I wrote [the poem] while I was on the plane going to L.A. When I got there, I was like, โYo, Iโm going to help you along.โ So, I gave him this. So, I said โLook at thisโ and he was like, โWow, you wrote this on the plane?'โ
