Taylor Swift has released an emotional new ballad for the CATS film.
Friday (November 15) marked the arrival of the 29-year-old’s new song “Beautiful Ghosts,” a moving piano record about the pangs of nostalgia and lost love. “All that I wanted was to be wanted/ Too young to wander London streets, alone and haunted/ Born into nothing/ At least you have something, something to cling to,” Swift sings in the song’s chorus, mourning the people of her past who are now a distant memory.
Swift and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber co-wrote the soundtrack number, which is performed by Francesca Hayward’s character Victoria in the upcoming musical film. Although it’s been said Swift’s persona, Bombalurina, sings only bits of the tune in the film, the “Delicate” musician’s studio version plays during the end credits of the movie. “There was an ambition and an aspiration to have an original song in the movie. Just very much this understanding of like let's write the best song we can," Swift said of the songwriting process, crediting Webber’s "beautiful haunting melody" for inspiring her to write the lyrics in the spur of the moment.
CATS, starring Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, James Corden, and more, will open in theaters on December 20. Listen to Swift’s new song “Beautiful Ghosts” above.
