A lawsuit has been filed against a car dealership in Michigan for using Eminem's hit song "Lose Yourself" in an ad.
According to a report TMZ published on Monday, January 27, Eight Mile Style, a company that controls Eminem's early catalog, is suing LaFontaine Ford St. Clair in Detroit after they used the popular song in an online ad last year to help promote a limited edition Detroit Lions Ford F-150 pickup truck. The ad featured the seasoned rapper's award-winning song in the background and used a caption that said, "You only get one shot to own a Special Edition Detroit Lions F-150."
Lawyers for Eight Mile Style said "Lose Yourself" — which won an Oscar and is currently 13x platinum per the Recording Industry Association of America — has been licensed by other car dealerships in the past and cited Chrysler's promotional campaign for the 2011 Super Bowl. They referred to Chrysler's ad that used the same song and asserted the company garnered millions of dollars in sales.
EMS' attorneys argue Ford should've requested to license the song for their ad and are suing for unspecified monetary damages. They also demanded the car dealership remove the ad ASAP. Although Eminem's song is at the center of the legal battle, the Detroit native is not involved in the lawsuit at all.
