This is probably not the kind of personal assistant people wanted to get when they got a smart speaker. Lots of people have been taking to twitter to report that Alexa has randomly been breaking out in laughter at them, for no apparent reason.
I live alone and have lights controlled by Amazon Echo. Tonight, while sleeping, i closed my eyes and said “Alexa, lamp off.”— Vedant Naik (@vedantNAIK) March 4, 2018
I heard a woman laugh, and lights were still on.
Now, I know that stupid device heard “laugh” instead of “lamp off”, but I can’t sleep anymore..... #fml
I’m genuinely terrified. No one said her name, and all of a sudden SHE LAUGHED out of NOWHERE— Kyle Fitzy Shanklin (@kylefitzy8) March 4, 2018
Amazon has said that they were working on the problem and that they think they have a solution for it. Alexa seemingly is hearing (out of nowhere apparently) a command for, "Alexa, Laugh." Since the creeped out Echo users have voiced their concerns, Amazon has disabled that command and made it a bit easier for Alexa to tell when someone genuinely wants a laugh from her. Hopefully no more users are creeped out, although this one seems pretty creepy and I don't know how Amazon will get around this one...
Replying bc THIS creepy thing happened last night: we got home and, totally unprompted, our Amazon Echo/Alexa started talking. And then i realized it was listing off local cemeteries and funeral homes??? I'd rather it laugh at me tbh— Kamo Boomin (@HeyItsKamo) March 7, 2018
