The city of Pontiac has issued a demolition permit for the Silverdome and says the process will begin December 3.
Officials say in a new release that the demolition will begin with the partial implosion of the mechanical equipment platform at the top of the structure.
Once that is completed, the remainder of the demolition will be done a section at a time by hydraulic excavators. Officials say that process will keep a seven person crew busy for six months, although the full demolition is expected to take a full year to complete.
Over the course of the project, officials say 1,700 tons of structural steel and 1,800 tons of rebar will be recycled at the Ferrous Processing plant in Pontiac.
