Tsunami watches and warnings are out for the entire West Coast as well as Hawaii following an 8.2 earthquake off Alaska around 1:30am PT. A tsunami watch is automatically generated by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center after a quake that registers above magnitude 7.5.
A tsunami warning is issued once there's evidence that an actual tsunami was created. Right now only Alaska and British Columbia are under warnings. Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii are in the watch category.
People in the areas covered by the watches and warnings should move to higher ground and seek shelter.
