“Stranger Things” star, Shannon Purser, has revealed that she is bisexual. The 19-year-old actress played the fan favorite character, Barb, on the Netflix hit, and also stars as Ethel Muggs on the CW’s series, “Riverdale.”
Her commentary on the CW series is why she decided to come out.
Purser had tweeted that her “Riverdale” co-star, Cole Sprouse, was mocking “Beronica shippers.” That term refers to fans who want to see a romantic relationship between characters Betty and Veronica. Some fans then accused Purser of “queerbaiting,” and she responded with a heartfelt message. She tweeted, “I don’t normally do this, but I figure now is as good a time as any to get personal. I’ve only just recently come out as bisexual to my family and friends.”
She tweeted, “It’s something I am still processing and trying to understand and I don’t like talking about it too much. I’m very, very new to the LGBT community. I have never heard of the term ‘queerbaiting’ until today. That being said, I have never ever wanted to alienate anyone and my tweet was thoughtless. I wasn’t referring to all of the Beronica shippers, just the ones who had been particularly cruel to me personally.”
Purser added, “Either way, it wasn’t a wise or kind thing to say and I’m disappointed in myself, especially as a Christian who has always been taught to speak love to others.”
