Jessica is addressing her relationship with John Mayer in her new book (Open Book, out tomorrow).
She said, “I constantly worried that I wasn't smart enough for him. He was so clever and treated conversation like a friendly competition that he had to win. My anxiety would spike and I would pour another drink. It was the start of me relying on alcohol to mask my nerves.”
During an interview with Hoda Kotb, Jessica said,“We were great at intimacy. We were great at loving each other. That was easy, but the relationship was very complex. It was always on again, off again, on again, off again.I went back close to nine times.”
One of the those times came after the surprise end of her relationship with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in 2009. A breakup which her book reveals was directly caused by John Mayer.
The night before her birthday, Romo saw a text come through to Jessica's phone from her ex.
She writes, "Tony confronted me with it immediately."
Romo accused her of seeing John "behind his back."
"I hadn't cheated on Tony at all," she insists, but Romo didn't believe her and "within that second, he broke up with me right there.
That cleared the way for Jessica, now a happily married mother-of-three, to get back with John yet again.
"I wouldn't be with him because of Tony, and now Tony was gone. I lost my feeling of agency in my life once again and felt I should just give in and be with John. He had promised forever in my parents' backyard. Who was I to argue?"
