Dave Chappelle showed up to a village council meeting in his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio to make it clear that he would pull his money out of the area if an affordable housing development plan went ahead.
Yellow Springs had been working with Oberer Homes on a new development project that was set to include a mix of single-family homes, duplexes, and townhouses; Oberer was also set to donate an additional 1.75 acres to the town where more affordable housing could be built in the future.
A visibly emotional Chappelle told the city council, 'You look like clowns -- I am not bluffing. I will take it all off the table.'
At issue is a significant new housing development that has divided the village of 3,700, where Chappelle lives on a large farm and has announced plans to convert an old fire station into a restaurant and comedy club.
Due to pushback from the community, and Chappelle, the council voted to reject the proposal and instead move forward with the original development plan: 143 single-family homes with a starting price of about $300,000.
