Matthew McConaughey met with politicians and spoke from The White House asking for gun reform after the shooting that killed 19 elementary students in his hometown.

The actor joined the White House press briefing yesterday, urging politicians on both sides to take action following the Uvalde shooting.

McConaughey said making a difference in the safety of our country is the best way to honor the lives lost.

He also said that him and his wife spent a lot of time with the families of victims of the shooting and now he is urging those in the highest office to make a change.

McConaughey said, “We need background checks, we need to raise the minimum age to purchase an AR-15 rifle to 21, we need a waiting period for those rifles, we need red flag laws and consequences for those who abuse them.”

He added, “These regulations are not a step back, they’re a step forward for a civil society and the second amendment.

“Is this a cure all? Hell no. But people are hurting, families are, parents are.”

McConaughey’s speech came after a short meeting with President Biden and a second day of meetings with lawmakers, as Congress considers new gun safety legislation this week.
