Detroit held peaceful protests every night over the weekend. At the late night, it got a little carried away with protesters and people not even from Detroit coming downtown and starting riots. We watched it all live on Facebook thanks to Detroit Free Press photographer Mandi Wright. She covered the protests in the wake of the death of George Floyd and also kept the camera rolling as the Detroit Police Department and protesters clashed following the protests.
Detroit now has an 8 pm curfew in effect every night. The curfew unfortunately didn't stop protesters from continuing to protest.
The tear gas and arrests came about 40 minutes after the curfew that was announced earlier in the day by Mayor Mike Duggan following two days of peaceful daytime protests that turned violent at night and included clashes with police.
Deputy Chief Todd Bettison said, "We want you to protest. We just don't want you to tear up our beautiful city. We love our city."
